Those are drawings and handmade object-aged book I created for Ben Goldenberg film  "Feast of Souls"

Handmade Aged Book

All material used for this project can be found in Art stores and in your kitchen!

1. This book had to be tick, large and old.
I didn't want to make pages in the book, so I used  two sketch notebook dim 14x17".
For book covers I used the back of sketch notebook, it is very similar to cardboard, and decorative red paper, beautiful decorative paper at: Hollanders  or
you can create and use collage made of newspaper, tissue paper, magazines, junk mail, typing paper, construction paper, unused napkins, and just about any other kind of paper for this project.

Your book or sketch notebook will be one of a kind!

2. First cut the wire with cutter. Make sure that the pages stay together it will make binding easiest for you.

3. I used  Gold sparkle Rexlage > cord for making jewelry, and color  chart you can find at Pepperell. It is strong and I didn't need to use needle!
Make book or repair sketch notebook with Japanese bookbinding techniques or as 'Singer' sewing binding.

A. Even up the pages and clamp the book together, weight down the front edge to keep the pages from moving, with heavy object.

B. Push the cord through the pages and tie the end with an overhand knot , pull the cord through until the knot is snug against the pages. Go back out to the front cover by pushing the cord up through the awl hole. This step anchors the cord.
Working from the top of the book to the bottom of the book, continue sewing in all the holes.

Now work from the bottom of the book back up to the top of the book, until it looks like the
following illustration. The sewing order of the holes does not matter.
When you get to the last hole, where the threads meet, tie a knot and cut off the ends. To
secure the knot, tuck the threads back into the hole and add a drop of glue.
Done.

4. For the cover instead of boards I will use back of the sketch notebook.

5.Place two peaces far apart as per spine dimension calculation.

6. Cut three pieces of stiff paper, this can be construction paper or craft paper, or any paper a little heavier. Use one piece of paper, and with Elmer's spray glue  (easier control and dry very fast) connect the front with back cover. Stroke represent the folds. The other two peaces we will use for inside the book.

7. Cut one peace of the stiff paper exactly the size of the book adding 1 2" to width and height, for cover folds. Spray glue on the 1 1/2" and fold tight.

8. To assemble the book, insert binded pages and use other two peace of the stiff paper to connect first page with front cover and last page with back cover.

9. For ageing material you will need : tea, coffee, metallic gold and dark red color spray and painting brush.
Make a pot of very dark coffee and cup of strong tea. Paint with brush over drawing first with tea, and than with coffee. Till page is still wet drop few nescafe beans to make dark spots. Some of the beans on the page edge melt with the brush.
For ageing look I put the page with the sketch in the oven (preheated to 150 degrees, and leave door open) for about 5 minutes. Watch it all the time, to make sure it is safe and that page doesn't role on the edge.
After 5 min. take the page out and let it cool off. Use spray to glue drawing page with blank page in the book.

10. For ageing book cover use sand paper to make a few scratches, randomly spray metallic gold color and with brush make spots with dark coffee.
That was it, done!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that you will have fun as I did to create your own.
