Artistic Image

From the Photo to the Artistic Image with Photoshop Filters, Blending Modes and Adjustment Layers the possibilities are endless.

1. This is the image I picked to use in this tutorial. Image is the lower resolution (333 x 445 px) and suffers from heavy compression artifacts. Using this technique we will be able to give this photograph a new life.

2.Duplicate (Ctrl+J) the Background Layer, name it 'Diffuse', apply Filter>Stylize>Diffuse and choose Anisotropic.

3. Duplicate (Ctrl+J) 'Diffuse' Layer and name it 'Find Edges' go to Filter>Stylize>Find Edges, set Blending mode to Overlay and opacity 27%. (The image on the left is at 100% opacity).

4. Duplicate 'Diffuse' Layer and place it on the top, name it 'Solarize', go to Filter Stylize>Solarize, set the Blending Mode to Liner Dodge, Opacity:75% and go to Image>Adjustment>Desaturate (Ctrl+Shift+U).

5. Duplicate 'Solarize' Layer (Ctrl+J) and go to Image>Adjustments>Invert (Ctrl+I), go to Filter>Blur> Gaussian Blur> Radius:4.2 px.

6. Using Paint Bucket Tool fill with the black, set Blending mode to Normal, and change the opacity to 45%.

7.Stamp (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E), name it 'Stamp Sketch'.

8. Duplicate 'Stamp Sketch' Layer and add Adjustment Layer Gradient Map, use a Gradient of your choice (one that I used you can download  here) set Blending Mode to Color Dodge and lower the opacity to 47%.

Final touches: Adjustment Layers> Levels, and  History Brush for eyes and lips.
